National Kids to Parks Day

Join us on Kids to Parks Day as we explore the Arboretum along with other hands on activities that will connect you with nature. Participate in a hands-on stream survey activity where nature guides will supervise the children as they wade into the shallow (knee-deep in most sections with firm sand-gravel bottom) stream. Space is limited, so arrive right at the start of the program to sign up for a 15 minute time slot with us at the shelter. Children under age 8 will need to be accompanied by an adult at the stream survey. It will take about 15 minutes to walk from the shelter through the woods down to the stream. To get in the water you need to wear:

  • An old pair of lace-up or Velcro-fasten tennis shoes, water shoes or strap-on sandals (no slip-ons or flip flops)
  • A bathing suit or athletic shorts
  • An old t-shirt or sweatshirt
  • A towel

Without these items you will have to observe from the streambank. While waiting or after your stream survey activity there will be a scavenger hike, nature craft using your hike collections and a snack available to participate in at the shelter.

This event will take place on Saturday, May 19 from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Robert O. Cook Memorial Arboretum Shelter (3550 W. County Highway A). This event is open to all ages. No fee or early registration is required.
